Plusnet Speed Test
This page helps Plusnet (UK) customers verify their broadband speeds. Whether you are on Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) or the new Full Fibre (FTTP), this tool confirms if your Hub Two is delivering the speeds you pay for.
Plusnet uses the Openreach network. Your speed depends heavily on your distance from the cabinet (for FTTC) or your specific Full Fibre tier (145, 500, or 900 Mbps).
How to interpret your Plusnet speed result
A Plusnet speed test measures three key metrics:
Download Speed: Should be near your "Minimum Guaranteed Speed".
• Full Fibre 900: Expect ~500-900 Mbps (Wired).
• Fibre 66: Expect ~35-66 Mbps depending on line length.
Upload Speed: Plusnet plans are Asymmetrical.
• FTTC usually caps at ~20 Mbps upload.
• Full Fibre 900 offers up to ~110 Mbps upload.
Ping (Latency): Typically 10ms - 25ms. Highly stable on Full Fibre.
Plusnet Broadband: Expected Performance
Connection characteristics
Technology: Part-Fibre (FTTC) and Full Fibre (FTTP).
Hardware: Plusnet Hub Two (rebranded BT Smart Hub 2) or older Hub One.
Network: Uses EE/BT backbone (very reliable).
Typical real-world performance
Wired (Ethernet): Stable at ~95% of plan speed.
Wi-Fi (Hub Two): ~400-600 Mbps near router (5 GHz).
Wi-Fi (Hub One): ~40-50 Mbps if stuck on 2.4 GHz.
Common Causes of Slow Plusnet Internet
If your internet feels slow, check these Plusnet-specific issues:
1. Master Socket (Test Socket): If on FTTC, unscrew your faceplate and plug into the hidden "Test Socket" to rule out internal wiring issues.
2. Flashing Orange Light: This means your Hub is trying to sync. If it persists, you may have a line fault.
3. Channel Congestion: The older Hub One struggles in crowded areas. Rebooting it can force it to pick a cleaner channel.

Troubleshooting Hub Two Lights
Solid Blue: Connected and working correctly.
Flashing Orange: Connecting to broadband. Wait 5 minutes.
Solid Orange: Broadband connected, but login failed. Reset password.
Red Light: System failure or line dead. Restart Hub.
Wired vs Wi-Fi Testing
To verify if Plusnet is delivering your guaranteed speed:
Connect a laptop directly to the Hub Two using a CAT6 Ethernet cable. Run the test. If wired speed is 500 Mbps but Wi-Fi is 200 Mbps, the issue is your Wi-Fi environment, not Plusnet.
When to contact Plusnet Support
Contact Plusnet Support (0800 432 0200) if:
Your Hub Light is Solid Orange for more than 15 minutes.
Your wired speed is below your "Minimum Guaranteed Speed" (check your contract).
You hear crackling on your landline phone (indicates copper line damage).
Plusnet Speed Test FAQs
What does the Flashing Orange light mean? It means the Hub is attempting to establish a connection. If it never turns blue, you likely have an external line fault.
Is Plusnet Full Fibre better than Fibre Extra? Yes. Full Fibre (FTTP) does not use copper phone lines, so it is faster, has lower latency, and is not affected by rain/weather.
How do I change my Wi-Fi channel? Log in to 192.168.1.254, go to "Advanced Settings" > "Wireless", and turn off "Smart Wireless" to manually select a channel.
Can I use my own router with Plusnet? Yes, but you must support VLAN 101 for FTTC/FTTP. You will need your Plusnet broadband username and password.
Compare with Alternative Providers
Compare your speeds with other UK ISPs:
- BT Speed Test: The parent company of Plusnet (same network).
- Virgin Media Speed Test: The main cable competitor (often faster peak speeds).
- Sky Speed Test: Uses the same Openreach network.
- TalkTalk Speed Test: Another budget-friendly Openreach provider.
