Lumos Speed Test
This page helps Lumos Fiber customers verify their 100% Fiber internet speeds. Unlike cable providers, Lumos delivers Symmetrical Speeds (Same Download & Upload) directly to your home via Adtran or Nokia optical terminals.
Use this tool to confirm if your connection matches your plan (e.g., 500 Mbps, 1 Gig, or 2 Gig) and troubleshoot common fiber issues like the "Red Optical Light".
How to interpret your Lumos speed result
Because Lumos is pure fiber, your results should be very consistent:
Download Speed: Should be 95-100% of your plan (e.g., ~940 Mbps on a 1 Gig plan). Fiber does not slow down during "peak hours" like cable.
Upload Speed: This is the key differentiator. Your upload should MATCH your download speed (e.g., 500 Mbps Up / 500 Mbps Down).
Ping (Latency): Expect extremely low latency, typically 3ms - 10ms. This is ideal for competitive gaming.
Lumos Fiber: Expected Performance
Connection characteristics
Technology: FTTH (Fiber to the Home).
Hardware: Adtran SDG 814-v6, Nokia ONT (Optical Network Terminal).
Consistency: High. Unaffected by weather or neighborhood congestion.
Typical real-world performance
Wired (Ethernet): 100% of plan speed (e.g., 940 Mbps).
Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6): ~500-800 Mbps near the router.
Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 5): ~300-500 Mbps max.
Common Causes of Slow Lumos Speed
If your fiber connection feels slow, check these specific issues:
1. Device Limitation: Testing a 1 Gig connection on an old phone? You will likely see ~300 Mbps. Use a PC with a Gigabit Ethernet port for accuracy.
2. Red Optical Light: If the "Optical" or "LOS" light on your wall unit is Red, the fiber cable outside your home is cut.
3. Wi-Fi Interference: Even fiber can be slowed by thick walls. Ensure your main router is not in a closet.
Lumos Router Login – Default IP, Username & Password
Access your Adtran or Nokia router settings to manage your network.

- Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar
- Enter username: admin
- Enter password: Check the sticker on your router
Troubleshooting Gateway Lights
Solid Green (Power/Optical): Service is active and healthy.
Red (Optical/LOS): Fiber signal lost. Check for bent cables or outages.
Off (Power): Check power adapter connection.
Wired vs Wi-Fi Testing
To verify the true speed of your Lumos line:
Plug a CAT6 Ethernet cable directly from the Lumos router to a laptop. If this test shows full speed (e.g., 940 Mbps Down / 940 Mbps Up), your fiber line is perfect, and any slowness is due to your Wi-Fi or devices.
When to contact Lumos Support
Call Lumos Support at 855-465-8667 if:
Your "Optical" light is Red.
Your "Power" light is off despite checking the outlet.
Your wired speed test is consistently below 50% of your plan speed.
Lumos Speed Test FAQs
What does the Red Optical light mean? This indicates a Loss of Signal (LOS). The physical fiber line to your home is broken or the signal is too weak. Call support immediately.
Does Lumos have data caps? No, Lumos Fiber offers unlimited data with no monthly caps or throttling.
Why is my upload speed so fast? Unlike cable providers (Spectrum/Xfinity) that limit upload, Lumos Fiber uses light signals to provide symmetrical bandwidth, making it ideal for Zoom and cloud backups.
Can I use my own router? Yes, you can connect your own router to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) ethernet port. However, using the Lumos-provided router ensures full support.
Compare with Alternative Providers
Compare yours speeds with other US Fiber/Cable providers:
- Frontier Speed Test: Another major Fiber provider with symmetrical speeds.
- Spectrum Speed Test: Major cable competitor (usually slower upload).
- Google Fiber Speed Test: The pioneer of Gigabit Fiber.
- AT&T Fiber Speed Test: Large scale fiber network leader.
