Shaw Speed Test
This page helps users of Shaw Fibre+ (now part of Rogers) understand their internet speed test results and determine whether the connection is performing within the normal range for Shaw broadband services.
Shaw's network is primarily Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC). While rebranded as "Fibre+," the last mile to your home is typically a coaxial cable, similar to Rogers and Xfinity. This allows for massive download speeds (up to 1.5 Gbps) but slower upload speeds compared to PureFibre.
How to interpret your Shaw speed test result
A Shaw speed test measures three core performance metrics:
Download speed – Shaw plans range from Fibre+ 300 to Fibre+ Gig 1.5. You should consistently see 90% or more of these speeds if testing via wired Ethernet.
Upload speed – This is the main difference from Telus. Expect 100-150 Mbps max, even on the fastest plans. This is normal for cable technology.
Latency (ping) – Typically 15–30ms. Good for gaming, but slightly higher than pure fiber connections.
These values should be evaluated based on the type of connection (Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi) and the time of day.
Shaw Fibre+: Expected Performance
Connection characteristics
Technology: DOCSIS 3.1 Cable (Asymmetric speeds).
Gateway: BlueCurve (XB6) or Fibre+ Gateway (XB7/XB8) with Wi-Fi 6/6E.
Peak Hours: 7 PM–11 PM. Cable bandwidth is shared with neighbors, so speeds may dip during heavy usage times.
Typical real-world performance
Download speed: ~1100 Mbps (Gig plan) or ~1650 Mbps (Gig 1.5 plan).
Upload speed: 100-150 Mbps.
Latency: 15–35ms.
If you have the Fibre+ Gig 1.5 plan, remember that a standard 1 Gbps Ethernet port on your laptop will cap your speed test at ~940 Mbps. You need a 2.5G adapter or Wi-Fi 6E to see full speeds.
Common Causes of Slow Shaw Speeds
Slow speed test results are often caused by local Wi-Fi interference or hardware bottlenecks.
Frequent causes
Weak Signal: The BlueCurve Gateway needs to be in a central open location, not in a basement cabinet.
Coax Splitters: Every splitter drops signal strength by 3.5dB. Remove unused splitters.
Old Devices: Testing on an old iPhone or laptop 802.11n card will limit you to <300 Mbps.

Troubleshooting Gateway Lights
Solid White: Online.
Blinking Amber/Orange: Connecting to Shaw network. If it never turns white, check coax cable.
Blinking Green: Getting upstream lock.
Solid Red: Hardware error. Contact support.
Wired vs Wi-Fi Testing on Shaw
While Shaw promotes "Wall-to-Wall Wi-Fi," physics still applies. Speeds scale with distance.
For accurate verification, test with a Cat6 Ethernet cable directly connected to the Gateway. Use the port marked with an orange line (on XB7/XB8) for >1 Gbps speeds.
When to contact Shaw support
You should consider contacting Shaw support (1-888-472-2222) if:
The Gateway light is blinking orange for more than an hour.
Your upload speed is consistently under 5 Mbps (indicates "noise" on the node).
You need a Pod to extend Wi-Fi coverage to dead zones.
Shaw Speed Test FAQs
Why is Telus upload speed faster than Shaw? Telus uses pure fiber optics which allows symmetrical speeds (Upload = Download). Shaw uses coaxial cable, which has limited upstream frequency space, capping uploads at ~100 Mbps.
What is Fibre+? It is a marketing term. For most residential customers, it means "Hybrid Fiber Coax" (Fiber to the neighborhood node, Coax to your house).
How do I lower my ping on Shaw? Use a wired Ethernet connection. If ping is still high, check for unnecessary splitters on your coax line which can add signal noise.
Competitors & Alternatives
If Shaw Fibre+ isn't meeting your needs:
- Telus Speed Test: The main competitor offering symmetrical PureFibre speeds.
- TekSavvy Speed Test: Reseller offering lower rates on Shaw's network.
- Starlink Speed Test: Low latency satellite internet for rural areas.
