Optus Speed Test

This page helps Optus NBN customers understand their internet speed test results and determine whether the connection is performing within the normal range for Optus broadband services.

Optus provides high-speed NBN via various technologies (FTTP, HFC, FTTN). A standout feature for gamers is "Optus Game Path," and for general reliability, the "Ultra WiFi Modem" with 4G backup.

How to interpret your Optus speed test result

An Optus speed test measures three core performance metrics:

Download speed – Should be close to your tier max (50, 100, 250, or 1000 Mbps). If stuck at 25 Mbps, check if you are on 4G Backup.

Upload speed – Critical for streamers. NBN 50 has 20 Mbps up. NBN 1000 can have 50 Mbps up. Optus uploads are generally stable.

Latency (ping) – Should be 10–20ms. If you use "Game Path," this may be lower to international servers.

These values should be evaluated based on the type of connection (Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi) and the time of day.

Optus NBN: Expected Performance

Connection characteristics

Technology: NBN (Mixed Technology). Performance depends on your home's physical connection (Fiber vs Copper).

Ultra WiFi Modem Gen 2: Wi-Fi 6 enabled for faster wireless speeds on modern devices.

Peak Hours: 7 PM–11 PM. Optus manages bandwidth well, but congestion on FTTN is possible.

Typical real-world performance

Download speed: ~48 Mbps (Home Standard), ~98 Mbps (Home Fast), ~230 Mbps (Home Superfast).

Upload speed: 18 Mbps (Standard), 18/36 Mbps (Fast).

Latency: 10–20ms domestic.

Speeds above 100 Mbps are only available on FTTP and HFC connections. FTTN is physically limited to ~100 Mbps (often ~50-80 Mbps depending on copper length).

Common Causes of Slow Optus Speeds

Slow speed test results are often due to using the 4G backup or Wi-Fi channel interference.

Frequent causes

4G Backup Mode: If your NBN drops, the modem switches to 4G (Solid Blue light). Speed is capped to keep you online but isn't fast.

Game Path Issues: While Game Path lowers ping, it doesn't increase download capability. Don't confuse ping with speed.

Wi-Fi Range: 5GHz is faster but shorter range. Ensure you aren't testing from the backyard.

Optus Modem Login – Default IP, Username & Password

Access your Optus Ultra WiFi Modem Gen 2 admin panel to manage Wi-Fi passwords, guest networks, and port forwarding.

Optus Modem Details Information
Login IP Address 192.168.0.1 – Default for Sagemcom F@st 5366 TN (Ultra WiFi Gen 2)
Default Username admin
Default Password (Printed on the sticker on the back/bottom of the modem)

Steps to Login

  1. Connect to your Optus Wi-Fi
  2. Open a browser
  3. Enter 192.168.0.1
  4. Enter 'admin' and the specific password from the sticker
  5. Go to "Wi-Fi Settings" to change channels if speeds are slow

Troubleshooting Gateway Lights

Solid Green (Internet): Connected to NBN. Optimal.

Solid Blue (Internet): Connected to 4G Backup. NBN is offline. Expect slower speeds.

Solid Red (Internet): No internet connection (NBN or 4G).

Blinking Green (DSL): Trying to sync with the node (FTTN only).

Wired vs Wi-Fi Testing on Optus

To verify if you are getting the "Home Ultrafast" (1000 Mbps) speeds, Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Always use a Cat6 Ethernet cable connected to the LAN port for speed tests above 100 Mbps.

When to contact Optus support

You should consider contacting Optus support (133 937) or use My Optus app if:

You are stuck on Blue Light (4G) for days.

Your speed is significantly below the "Typical Evening Speed" for your plan.

You need to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP (Optus can arrange NBN upgrades in eligible areas).

Optus Speed Test FAQs

Is Optus good for gaming? Yes, especially with the "Game Path" add-on which optimizes routing. NBN latency is generally low.

Why is my internet slow but I have full Wi-Fi bars? Wi-Fi signal strength does not equal internet speed. You might have a great connection to the modem, but the modem has a poor connection to the NBN (or is on 4G backup).

Can I use my own router? Yes, but you will likely lose the 4G Backup capability and Landline phone service unless you keep the Optus modem in the chain.
