HughesNet Speed Test
This tool verifies Internet speeds for HughesNet satellite subscribers. Because HughesNet relies on geostationary satellites orbiting 22,000 miles above Earth, users should expect very different performance characteristics compared to cable or fiber.
The **Gen5** and **Gen6** (Jupiter 3) plans offer faster download speeds, but latency remains unavoidable.
Interpreting Your HughesNet Results
Download Speed:
- Gen5 (Jupiter 2): Typically 15-25 Mbps.
- Gen6 (Jupiter 3): Can reach 50-100 Mbps.
If your speed is consistently < 3 Mbps, check if you have exceeded your data cap. HughesNet throttles speeds
aggressively once the priority data allowance is used.
Upload Speed: Typically 1-3 Mbps. Large file uploads (e.g., backing up photos) will take a long time.
Ping (Latency): 600ms to 800ms is normal. Do not be alarmed by this high number; it is a physical limitation of satellite technology. It will cause a delay in voice calls (Zoom/Skype) and makes real-time multiplayer gaming impossible.
System Control Center (192.168.0.1)
The System Control Center is a built-in webpage on your modem (HT2000W / HT3000W) that works even without internet access. Use it to check signal strength and run diagnostic tests.

Troubleshooting State Codes
Your modem displays "State Codes" in the Control Center to indicate status:
12.1.1 - 12.1.9: Signal degraded (Rain Fade/Weather). Wait for weather to clear.
21.1.1: Ethernet cable unplugged.
30.1.1: Modem overheating. Ensure vents are not blocked.
Modem LEDs (HT2000W)
Power / System / Receive / Transmit / LAN: All should be solid Blue (or solid White on newer models).
Wi-Fi LED: Solid means Wi-Fi is on. Blinking means traffic activity.
LAN LED Off: No device connected. Check your Ethernet cable.
How to Manage Data & "Video Data Saver"
HughesNet plans come with a "soft cap". Once you use your priority data (e.g., 50GB), speeds are throttled to 1-3 Mbps.
Video Data Saver: This feature automatically lowers video resolution to 480p to conserve data. If Netflix looks blurry, this is why. You can disable it in the usage settings to watch occasional HD video, but it consumes 3x more data.
Bonus Zone: Between **2am and 8am**, you get an extra 50GB of data. Schedule large downloads (game updates, backups) during this time to save your main allowance.
When to Contact Support (866-347-3292)
Call support if:
Your System Control Center shows a "State Code" starting with 11.x.x (Antenna Pointing Error) or 13.x.x (Transmitter Error).
You have physically bumped the dish and signal dropped.
Speeds are slow even after buying a Data Token.
HughesNet Speed Test FAQs
Can I use a VPN with HughesNet? Not recommended. VPNs add encryption overhead which, combined with the 600ms satellite latency, makes browsing extremely slow and often causes timeouts.
Why is my internet slow even though I have data left? Check the "Bonus Zone" vs "Service Plan" usage. You might have Bonus Zone data left (usable only 2am-8am) but be out of Service Plan data (usable anytime).
Is Starlink better than HughesNet? Starlink uses Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, offering much lower latency (30-50ms) and higher speeds. If Starlink is available in your area and within budget, it is generally the superior choice for gaming and video calls.
